Berber Music

Berbers, the original inhabitants of Morocco, are world famous for their biting and stimulating rhythms, which inspired today’s trance music. The Hungarian composer Béla Bartók went to Morocco to make field recordings and the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin made albums with local musicians.

Traditional Berber songs are based on call and response vocals and mesmerizing percussion.

Musical Genres

Amarg – Sung poetry from the Atlas region of Morocco.

Gharnati (Arabic for Granada) is one of the major Andalusian musical styles, migrated from Granada, Spain, to Morocco in the 15th century. Its roots lie in the diverse music schools of medieval Andalusia, where the Arab-Andalusian musical style originally developed some 800 years earlier. Gharnati was preserved by the Tlemceni families and other communities that fled medieval Spain to settle in several places in Morocco, especially in Fes.
