This summer, Rio’s 17-piece retro samba band Orquestra Imperial makes a rare UK appearance at Koko in London on July 12th. Featuring some of the best-known names in Brazilian rock, pop, and electronica, Orchestra Imperial are a collaborative group of instrumentalists and singers who have renewed Brazilian music this millennium. Driven by a genuine sense of musical curiosity, their hip, young version of Rio’s golden age takes samba back to its dancehall roots as they guide the audience through a range of Brazilian genres.
The band is a hobby for them all, so performances are unrehearsed and totally improvised, which means that they place the audience at the center and each gig is unique and individual. They have been credited with reviving the passion for dancehall samba, which is now the latest craze among Rio’s young generation.
