Barlast Tests Folk Tradition and Machine Learning On Imitation Game

Barlast – Imitation Game (self-released, 2025)

On the album Imitation Game, Finnish ensemble Barlast conducts Alan Turing’s famous test within the context of folk music and tradition. The group used open source machine learning algorithms to reproduce folk singer Amanda Kauranne’s voice in multiple forms. After that, they combined those artificial voices with traditionally performed instruments and vocals. The result is eccentric and experimental and may appeal to fans of avant-garde exploratory music.

Founded in 2016, the ensemble amalgams Nordic folk music, contemporary music, jazz, and art rock. It has released five albums and performed at clubs, festivals, and showcase events across Europe and Japan.
