Guitar Masters to Perform at First Madrid Community Guitar Festival

Four concerts featuring Rafael Riqueni, Gerardo Núñez, Alfredo Lagos, and Alejandro Hurtado inaugurate the Festival de la Guitarra de la Comunidad de Madrid (Madrid Community Guitar Festival).

Headlined by prominent flamenco guitarists Rafael Riqueni, Gerardo Núñez, Alfredo Lagos, and Alejandro Hurtado, the inaugural edition of the Guitar Festival takes place from April 30th to May 4th, 2024 at Teatros del Canal in Madrid.

The Madrid Community fosters this new festival in line with its support for flamenco, recently designated as Intangible Cultural Heritage of the region. This official recognition reaffirms the deep-rooted presence of flamenco in a region pulsating year-round with flamenco rhythms and melodies showcased in events like Suma Flamenca, Suma Flamenca Joven, and Miradas Flamenkas, as well as in the programming of Teatros del Canal and the Theater Network.

Directed by Antonio Benamargo, the festival’s lineup aims to invigorate the flamenco scene, filling a notable void in the capital’s cultural calendar. Benamargo notes the significant demand from both flamenco artists and enthusiasts, underscoring Madrid’s fervent passion for flamenco music.

The festival features four gala concerts showcasing flamenco guitar in the Sala Verde of Teatros del Canal, along with three parallel sessions including a roundtable discussion, two presentations, and three guitar concerts in the Sala Negra.

Each edition of the festival will pay homage to a pivotal guitar master and their artistic legacy. This year, the festival honors Madrid-born maestro Ramón Montoya. The opening roundtable discussion, “Ramón Montoya and Concert Flamenco Guitar,” will feature journalist Pedro Calvo moderating a panel including writer and producer José Manuel Gamboa, journalist and guitar teacher Pablo San Nicasio, guitarist Víctor Monge “Serranito,” and guitar maker Amalia Ramírez. Following this, Madrid guitarist Agustín Carbonell “Bola” will perform a concert highlighting Montoya’s compositions.
