Renowned Brazilian vocalist Astrud Gilberto, whose ethereal rendition of “The Girl from Ipanema” captivated audiences worldwide during the 1960s bossa nova era, has passed away at the age of 83, as confirmed by her family.

In the 1960s, Astrud Gilberto was married to influential bossa nova pioneer Joao Gilberto, a brilliant guitarist and composer. Joao Gilberto had collaborated with American saxophonist Stan Getz in 1963 to produce the monumental album “Getz/Gilberto.” This groundbreaking project propelled the enchanting Brazilian bossa nova sound onto the international stage, blending the rhythmic allure of Brazilian samba with the sophistication of “cool jazz.” The release featured Astrud’s mesmerizing vocals, most notably showcased in the enchanting duet, “The Girl from Ipanema,” which swiftly skyrocketed to become the album’s crowning achievement. “Getz/Gilberto” not only earned widespread acclaim but also secured three Grammy Awards, including the prestigious Album of the Year accolade, an unprecedented honor for a jazz record.

For Astrud Gilberto, destiny took an unforeseen turn with “The Girl from Ipanema.” This timeless melody, by chance, became her inaugural recorded song, heralding the onset of a remarkable career. Originally sung by her husband Joao Gilberto, “The Girl from Ipanema” found its way into Astrud’s path in 1963. In particular, while collaborating with Stan Getz and fellow Brazilian bossa nova luminary Antônio Carlos Jobim in New York City, Astrud was unexpectedly invited to participate, despite her lack of prior recording experience.

Embracing the song’s transformative power, Astrud embarked on a journey that led her to the United States. Touring alongside Stan Getz, she showcased her vocal prowess, captivating audiences with an engaging mix of bossa nova and American jazz standards.
