Eight flamenco composers chosen from a total of 88 candidates will perform today, March 8, 2022 at the grand final gala that will be held this evening at the Teatro Central in Seville at 7:30 p.m. On November 16, International Flamenco Day, the Spanish Society of Authors and Publishers (SGAE) and the SGAE Foundation, in collaboration with the Andalusian Flamenco Institute and the Paco de Lucía Foundation, announced the birth of the I SGAE Paco de Lucía Flamenco Award (I Premio SGAE de Flamenco Paco de Lucía) with the purpose of stimulating and recognizing flamenco composition. The SGAE Foundation will grant a total of 11,700 euros to the winners.
A professional jury, made up of the outstanding composers and musicians Pepe Habichuela, José Fernández “Tomatito” and Jorge Pardo and, on behalf of the Paco de Lucía Foundation, Lucía Sánchez Varela and Casilda Sánchez Varela, who received advice from composer and foundation member Alejandro Sanz, has selected the following works as finalists: ‘Soleá’ by Belén Martín; ‘El silencio es oro’ by Diego Amador; ‘Arrebol’ by David de Arahal; ‘Soleá 2.0’ by Alfonso Aroca; ‘El Greco’ by José Carlos Gómez; ‘Gato Montoya’ from Melón Jiménez; ‘Aire de solano’ from Rober Molina; and ‘Contrarreloj’ from Juan Pérez Rodríguez.
Four of the eight composers will receive a cash prize: 6,000 euros for the winner, a second prize of 3,000 euros, a third of 1,500 and a fourth prize to which 1,200 euros will be allocated.
