Middle Eastern and Spanish Musical Connections

Darawish – Madar (Darawish, 2020)

Madar is an album by an international band called Darawish. The name Darawish means dervish in Arabic. The band was created from the coexistence of different artistic sensibilities and cultural experiences.

Band members include Syrian Arab ud player Hamer Bitar; Persian ney, flute, and tombak player and vocalist Kaveh Sarvarian; and Spanish musicians Pablo Hernández on sax; Luis Taberna on percussion; and Fernando Leira on bass. The artists share and develop their original music in a contemporary and multicultural context in Madrid, Spain’s capital.

Darawish’s sound skillfully combines the classical and traditional folkloric musical heritage of the Mediterranean and Middle East.
