Artist Profiles: Coşkun Karademir

Coşkun Karademir was born in Istanbul, Turkey in 1986. He is an Anatolian baglama and kopuz master.

The Turkish artist was captivated by the iconic Anatolian folk lute, the baglama, as a small child. He learned from numerous Anatolian masters. Karademir dedicated himself to folk and mystical music, releasing notable albums in both genres.

Karademir quickly drew attention with his CDs and concerts. He wrote the scores for various Turkish television series and films, and went on to receive awards and recognition for his success as a musical director for several albums.

Attracted by the mystic sounds of a various cultures, he arranged meetings between world-famous artists, and out of these meetings grew many concerts, collaborations and album projects.

Karademir served for a time as a state artist, involved in academic studies and teaching at various universities.

When his group The Secret Ensemble that included renowned Iranian vocalist Mahsa Vahdat released its first album, Kuşların Çağrısı (The Call of Birds), he emerged onto the world music stage.

His album Endless Path, produced by Erik Hillestad, received critical acclaim.

With a variety of solo, duo, quartet and ensemble projects, Coşkun Karademir continues to present local musical programs to world music audiences.

The Coşkun Karademir Quartet includes Coşkun Karademir on baglama and kopuz; Cem Ekmen on duduk; Uğurcan Sesler on cello; and Ömer Arslan on percussion.
