Artist Profiles: Guadiana

Guadiana

Guadiana is a very versatile flamenco artist: he is the cantaor that most dancers prefer, the palmero sought after by Camarón, Morente, and other artists, and the composer of popular tunes such as Tu madre tuvo la culpa by Pata Negra.

Guadiana’s background should be added to this important, multi-faceted path: he is undeniably from the Spanish region of Extremadura, and the descendant of the great Porrinas de Badajoz. He knows how to combine his family’s knowledge with musical youth’s inventiveness. Sometimes, the two things come together as in the case of his nephew, Juan Jose Suarez “Paquete”, who produced the recording with Juan Carmona.

Guadiana´s first recording displays a cantaor with a beautiful voice and an outstanding command of cantes (Andalusian folksongs). The more innovative themes allow him to introduce social messages, as in Oye Extremadura. Guadiana’s version of Javier Ruibal´s song Pasara offers his vision of Andalusian pop.
