Kumar Mukherjee was born in 1970. He started learning music at a young age. He began training under the tabla virtuoso, Pandit Shankar Ghosh, but later switched over to vocal music. His initiation into vocal music was by Sanjukta Ghosh.
Ustad Munawar Ali Khan,son of the legendary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan took him under his able tutelage and taught him the fine nuances of Kasur-Patiala Gharana of vocal music. After the demise of his mentor Kumar took training from Ustad Raza Ali Khan.
He has participated in numerous music concerts and received rave reviews. Some noteworthy concerts being Dover Lane Music Conference, Sadarang Music conference, Tansen Samaroh, Anirban Foundation.
He has traveled extensively as a cultural ambassador to countries like Singapore, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
HMV-Saregama released a solo album of Kumar titled ‘Rising Star’.
His education was in one of the premier institutions of the country, La Martiniere for Boys, Kolkata. Kumar did his graduation and post-graduation in English from Jadavpur University. His late father was a footballer of international repute, and represented the country in 130 international matches.
Kumar is also a music teacher who has an institution, Raagreet which is a center for the all-round honing of classical music.
