SGAE Foundation has announced that the third edition of the ‘Flamencos and mestizos’ (flamenco and hybrids) series will take place from May 21 to 23 at the Sala Berlanga in Madrid.
Over three days, several emerging artists such as María José Pérez Rodríguez, Ana Salazar, Rocio Rico, Gardenia, Maui, and Cara Emilio Café will showcase different ways of understanding deep flamenco singing.
Composer and singer Paco Ortega curates the ‘Flamencos and mestizos’ series’. Ortega highlights the quality of Maria Jose Perez and Ana Salazar, who will open the series on May 21; the hybridization ability of Gardenia; the sensitivity and poetry of Rocio Rico; and the courage to Maui, a transgressor of song, aesthetics and melody. The showcase will close on May 23 with Emilio Cara Café, accompanied by some artists fromthe “Las Tres Mil Viviendas” barrio (neighborhood) in Seville.
About the artists
Born in Almería, María José Pérez is a flamenco singer who has collaborated with many musicians and companies worldwide.
Singer and dancer Ana Salazar is an established flamenco artist looking for new channels of expression. Forged as a dancer in the best flamenco companies, she presents a union of song and dance that has been internationally recognized.
Rocio Rico, an Andalusian singer and songwriter based in Bologna (Italy), has spent over a decade interested in experimentation and fusion of musical genres.
Gardenia, a performer and composer born in Madrid, began researching and nurturing new tunes, singing in the street and at live music venues. She is attracted by crosspollination and has embarked on several projects of music and art since she began traveling the world at age 20.
Maui started singing, composing and playing guitar and piano at a young age but at 18, after enrolling in the conservatory of music, she opted for the cello. Her first solo album is Viaje interior (inner journey) on Nuevos Medios.
Finally, Cara Café, El Torombo and some artists of the Seville neighborhood of “Las Tres Mil Viviendas” have come together to show what happens in this neighborhood that, as Paco Ortega, indicates “the square meter is not measured in euros but in talent. ”
