Cuban singer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Roberto (Bobby) Carcassés received Cuba’s 2012 National Music Award for his lifetime work.

The jury, presided over by Digna Guerra and integrated by Luis Carbonell, Maria Teresa Linares, Adalberto Alvarez and Pancho Amat—all the National Awards in that field—recognized the long and fruitful work of the award-winner.

Some minutes after receiving the news, Bobby declared to the press that he was happy but that he had not totally taking the news in. Later, he said that the award was a commitment to go on, that receiving an award like this one was difficult, so now he was certain that all the work done along these years was worth the effort.

In a brief dialogue with the press, the multifaceted Carcassés and self-taught artist recalled that since he was a child he liked singing and drawing.

He also talked about the beginnings of his career, his debut in 1955 and his official presentation in 1956 with the vocal quartet of Bobby Collazo, author of “La ultima noche”.

Having more than 50 years of artistic life, the multifaceted artist, who is also actor and painter confessed that what bothers him the most is to spend the day doing nothing, that’s why he tries to paint, to compose or to study music every day.

Until the last day of my existence I will be giving my talent,” expressed the famous jazzman.

He also recognized the quality of all Cuban musicians, of art schools and he said that he’s convinced that the future of jazz in Cuba is certainly good because the new generation, the one that is being formed right now, has a very good education.
