Rough Guide to the Music of Brazil (World Music Network RGNET1188CD, 2007)
Brazil is one of those countries like Cuba and Mali that seem to be goldmine for music talent. The Rough Guide to Brazil (second edition) presents fabulous music, but it’s only a small part of what is out there.
The compilation includes popular names as well newcomers. The greatest of the artists featured is the eclectic Carlinhos Brown. His always excellent recordings range from MPB and rock to samba and afro-Brazilian music. In this recording the compilation producer chose the Afro-Brazilian side of Carlinhos Brown with a great piece with Tata Monale.
For the latest music, check out the edgy sounds of Mylene, who combine electronics with Afro-Brazilian beats. But if what you like classic bossa nova, it is well represented by Chico Buarque.
Several regional styles are also represented. Not everything in Brazil is samba and bossa nova so you can get a brief taste of forró, choro, and other genres.
