In recent years, the great sacred music traditions of Europe have found their way to larger audiences. The mesmerizing Gregorian chant sounds of the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo de Silos in Spain opened the doors to other forms of early Christian music. Cappella Romana brings us the sounds of the eastern Mediterranean with a beautiful mix of Byzantine chant and choral works in the Eastern Orthodox tradition, including ancient hymns from Constantinople and new choral works inspired by the eastern tradition.

Cappella Romana, from Portland (Oregon) is a leading American professional chamber vocal ensemble. Their goal is to make Slavic and Byzantine repertories accessible to the general public.

The musical pieces “Angelic Light: Music from Eastern Cathedrals” feature both liturgical and para-liturgical works.

Alexander Lingas is the Founding Artistic Director. In addition to its dedication to mastering the Byzantine and Slavic repertories in their original languages, Cappella Romana has also performed works by contemporary composers such as Michael Adamis, Christos Hatzis, Ivan Moody, Arvo Pärt, John Tavener, and Tikey Zes.

Cappella Romana’s recording include: Tikey Zes Choral Works and When Augustus Reigned (Gagliano Records); The Akáthistos Hymn by Ivan Moody, Epiphany: Medieval Byzantine Chant, and Gothic Pipes: The Earliest Organ Music (Gothic); Music of Byzantium (in cooperation with the Metropolitan Museum of Art selling over 11,000 copies); Lay Aside All Earthly Cares: Music by Fr. Sergei Glagolev and The Fall of Constantinople (CR Records).
