Noa
UCLA Live unveiled its 2011-12 season, highlighted by a diverse array of events in classical, jazz, roots, world and popular music along with three unique dance programs.

The 2011-12 world music series features artists at the top of their craft who also serve as empowering ambassadors of their respective cultural heritage, including acclaimed trumpeter and activist Hugh Masekela (Feb. 10); graceful and elegant pipa player Wu Man (Nov. 19); prolific and beloved Israeli world music star Achinoam Nini (Noa) (March 24); and afrobeat sensation Seun Kuti (April 20), performing with his legendary father Fela’s band Egypt 80.

In roots music, living legend Earl Scruggs (Nov. 5) will present his signature banjo style while the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops (April 6) carry on the tradition of the African-American string bands of the old South with a uniquely modern vibe.

UCLA Live’s 2011-12 season — programmed under the leadership of interim director Christopher Waterman, dean of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture — is punctuated by performers who simultaneously embrace tradition and push artistic boundaries in events that embody both sides of the creative spectrum, featuring headliners that include established, beloved legends and critically acclaimed up-and-comers.
