Los Cenzontles – Adios Ke Aloha (Los Cenzontles Mexican Arts Center, 2026)
Mexican music collective Los Cenzontles have released Adios Ke Aloha: Waves of the Same Sea, a splendid 16-track album that explores the historical and musical ties between Mexico and Hawaii. The record features Taj Mahal, David Hidalgo of Los Lobos, Hawaiian musicians Gary Haleamau and Sonny Lim, and several generations of the talented Los Cenzontles performers.
The project’s concept focuses on 1832, when Mexican vaqueros traveled to Hawaii to teach cattle-handling methods. These Mexican cowboys continued the traditions carried to Mexico by the original Spanish vaqueros who accompanied Spanish settlers to the Americas. The Mexican vaqueros also introduced musical customs and the guitar, which later became part of paniolo, or Hawaiian cowboy culture.
Accordingly, Adios Ke Aloha delivers a delightful, timeless and deeply captivating dialog between Mexican and Hawaiian traditions. In these remarkable conversations, the Hawaiian slack-key guitar, lap steel, and ipu gourd appear alongside Mexican harp, accordion, and various instruments derived from the Spanish guitar: bajo sexto, jarana, and requinto. In addition to Mexican and Hawaiian traditions, the songs also incorporate blues, rancheras, folk, and Afro-Caribbean influences.
Spanish, Hawaiian, and English appear throughout the album, which includes new interpretations of traditional and modern material. Much of the record was captured live, with an emphasis on collaboration, cultural exchange, Native knowledge, and community.

- “Ridin’ Down to Santa Fe” captures the excitement of a horseback journey toward Santa Fe, with themes of romance, adventure, and affection for the American Southwest.
- “Waiʻalae” expresses longing for a loved one and the comfort of home. The lyrics portray enduring affection across distance and time.
- “Deportee” pays tribute to migrant farmworkers whose lives and deaths were overlooked. The song addresses immigration, labor, dignity, injustice, and the importance of remembering individual identities.
- “Hawaiian Cowboy” celebrates Hawaiian cowboy culture through references to horses, floral leis, dance, beauty, and pride in Hawaii’s ranching heritage.
- “Fishin’ Blues” offers a playful look at fishing, family life, and simple pleasures. Humor, shared experiences, and everyday joy drive the song.
- “A Matter of Time” explores temporary separation caused by work or migration. Hope, patience, family commitment, and the expectation of reunion remain central themes.
- “Adios Ke Aloha” combines Hawaiian and Spanish expressions of love and farewell. The lyrics convey longing, tenderness, and emotional connection while awaiting a loved one’s response. An accompanying Hawaiian chant honors the beauty of the land and expresses respect, gratitude, and cultural pride.
- “Olas del Mismo Mar” emphasizes shared heritage and common humanity. Agricultural imagery reinforces themes of community, resilience, cultural roots, and unity across borders.
- “Burbujitas (Tiny Bubbles)” celebrates love, happiness, and companionship through a cheerful toast. The multilingual lyrics associate sparkling wine with gratitude, affection, and life’s simple pleasures.
- “Arizona Skies” is an Instrumental jam that intertwines son jarocho, Hawaiian music and various other influences.
