“A Matilde Coral” Introduces Flamenco De Cuartito Vol. 3

“A Matilde Coral” is a new single and a preview of Volume 3 in Flamenco De Cuartito Volumen 3, the ongoing project from flamenco guitarist, composer, and producer José Torres Vicente.

The track reworks the main theme from the documentary Acariciando el aire, directed by Paco Ortiz, which focuses on Sevillian dancer Matilde Coral. Its musical point of departure comes from the melody of an “escobilla por alegrías,” reframed through a contemporary guitar approach.

Volume 3 continues Flamenco de Cuartito as an exploration of flamenco in transition across tradition, studio practice, and digital circulation. The series also connects to Torres Vicente’s doctoral research at Universidad Politécnica de Valencia, which examines how flamenco reinvents itself today.

Torres Vicente cites lo-fi aesthetics (low-fidelity sound that embraces imperfection), DIY culture (self-managed creation and production), and hauntology (the sense of “lost futures” lingering in the present) as key reference points for his current work in flamenco and adjacent world music contexts. The single centers on a continuous major-mode arpeggio that maintains a steady pulse throughout, while murmured voices add an intimate, physical presence.

Torres Vicente has performed and worked in studios with artists including Carmen Linares, Kiko Veneno, and Javier Barón. He also operates El Cuartito, a rooftop home studio in Seville that functions as both a recording space and the conceptual hub of the project. Future volumes are set to add new collaborations, sounds, and creative angles.
