Flute Awakening: Eliza Marshall’s Solo Debut Breathes New Life Into Global Minimalism

Eliza Marshall – New Birth (Real World X, 2025)

Eliza Marshall unveils New Birth, her first solo EP. Best known for her work as a flutist with Peter Gabriel’s New Blood Orchestra and the folk group Ranagri, Marshall now steps into the spotlight as a composer and solo artist.

Recorded between Real World Studios in England and Dakar, Senegal, New Birth features three beautifully crafted original tracks. Marshall delivers exquisite flute performances mixed with West African drums and kora, Celtic music influences, minimalist repetition, calming ambient electronic drones, and cinematic elements. The final track, “Our Times,” is released for the first time with the EP. Drawing inspiration from Steve Reich’s Six Marimbas, the piece brings together hypnotic structures and engaging melodies.

This marks a shift from being a flute player for hire to discovering my own artistic identity,” says Marshall. “It’s about seeing music through my own creative eyes.”

Marshall’s diverse background spans western classical training and collaborations with Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Florence & The Machine, and The White Stripes. Her musical influences range from Reich and Paul Simon to traditional world music.

New Birth features contributions from Senegalese sabar player Ady Thioune, Gambian kora master Ansumana Suso, and UK-based musicians Andrew Morgan and Dònal Rogers, with production by Ivor Novello Award-winner Graeme Pleeth.
