The VIII Flamenco Mediterráneo Festival will showcase the winners of the 2024 Cante de las Minas competition in Alicante on November 23. The event, organized by Fundación Mediterráneo, is recognized as a key celebration of flamenco in the region.
The festival’s lineup features the top artists from the 63rd edition of the Cante de las Minas, held in La Unión. Performers include Jesús Corbacho, recipient of the ‘Lámpara Minera’ for best singer; Joni Jiménez, who took home the ‘Bordón Minero’ for best guitarist; La Yunko, awarded the ‘Desplante Femenino’ for dance; and José ‘El Marqués,’ winner of the ‘Filón’ for best instrumentalist.
In addition to live performances, the festival will offer a variety of activities, including workshops, masterclasses, lectures, documentary screenings, a photography contest, and an exhibition of winning works.
According to the president of the Cante de las Minas Foundation, Joaquín Zapata: “For the Cante de las Minas Foundation, it is a pleasure to collaborate again with the Mediterráneo Foundation. We always try to be ambassadors of our culture and the fact that our contest winners are at this festival for another year attests to the interest of the public and institutions in Cante de las Minas.”
The festival will take place between October 24 and December 1, 2024, offering a varied program with internationally renowned artists, conferences and educational activities that will delight flamenco lovers.
The opening event will take place on October 24 at 7:00 p.m., where the winning images from the festival’s photography contest will be exhibited. The opening show of singing and guitar will be performed by Ismael De La Rosa ‘El Bola’ and El Peli.
On November 7, the dancer and teacher Fefa Gómez will give a lecture entitled ‘The professionalization of flamenco in Alicante’, offering an intimate perspective of the process of professionalization in flamenco and its impact on the cultural scene in Alicante.
On November 9, the renowned singer from Granada Marina Heredia will present her show ‘A journey through the styles of flamenco’.
Moving forward, on November 16, it will be the turn of the dancer Lucía La Piñona with her show ‘Insaciable’.
Finally, on November 30, the dancers Miguel Ángel Heredia and Alberto Sellés will present ‘Trémula’, an intimate and passionate show that explores the paths of emotion through flamenco dance.
The program is completed with the exhibition of photographs from the ‘Flamenco Photography Competition’ and a series of documentaries that will extend the cultural agenda until December.
The president of the Fundación Mediterráneo, Luis Boyer, has pointed out that “this festival is an opportunity to showcase the talent of great flamenco figures and offer the public the chance to enjoy top-level shows at our venues in Alicante and Murcia.”
Since its creation, the Fundación Mediterráneo has dedicated itself to disseminating and promoting knowledge and the arts through concerts, stage events, audiovisuals, and conferences with great speakers, with the aim of growing and making people and society grow.
For its part, the Cante de las Minas Foundation has the mission of promoting, disseminating and preserving flamenco art, declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO, in all its expressions. Its main objective is to safeguard flamenco traditions, especially those of the Murcia region and, in particular, of the La Unión region, the result of immigration during the peak mining period in the area.
