Simon Shaheen to Perform Music of the Arab World in Brooklyn

Renowned ‘ud (oud) player Simon Shaheen is set to perform at Roulette in Downtown Brooklyn on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 8:00 PM. Shaheen, widely regarded as one of the most influential Arab musicians of his generation, is a virtuoso on the ‘ud, an ancient short-necked lute and precursor to the European lute.

Born in Tarshiha in the Galilee to a Palestinian family, Shaheen’s musical career began in early childhood. Over his career, he has composed music for theater and film, including The Sheltering Sky and Malcolm X. In 1994, he was honored with the National Heritage Fellowship, the highest award in the U.S. for traditional arts.
