The Travellers – Black Black Minds (VP Records, 2024 reissue)
Black Black Minds, the debut and only album by The Travellers, was originally released in the 1970s and gained notoriety. This four-part harmony group, comprised of Neville Morris, Leroy Hoffman, Ashley Fray, and Wesley Codner, recorded the album under the guidance of Lloyd “Prince Jammy” James, a gifted engineer and disciple of King Tubby.
The album captures the essence of the “rockers” era of roots reggae with its close harmonies, sincere lyrics, and precise musicianship, all enhanced by Jammy’s skillful production. Although it did not achieve the same commercial success as Love Crisis, Jammy’s debut album with Black Uhuru, Black Black Minds remains a noteworthy piece of reggae history.
Initially, The Travellers had only a few songs when they approached Prince Jammy. However, Jammy encouraged them to improvise, leading to the creation of the album in just one month. The songs, which reflect themes of struggle, hope, love, and classic Jamaican storytelling, were recorded using both Jammy’s existing riddims and new compositions. The album was mixed at the iconic King Tubby’s studio.
Now, this hidden gem has been reissued with fully remastered audio, restored artwork, updated credits, and extensive sleeve notes by King Jammy’s specialist, Angus Taylor.
