Cuba Gears Up for Havana Drum Festival

Organizers of the Havana Drum Festival announced that the Guillermo Barreto in Memoriam International Drum Contest will take place from March 8 to 13.

Supported by the Cuban Music Institute and the Ignacio Piñero Music Center, the event is open to Cubans and foreigners living in the island of any age.

The event includes five categories: drum set, snare drums, African drums, bongos and African talking drums; each player is allowed to compete in up to two modalities.

Angel Gomez and Giraldo Piloto, general director and president of the contest the Festival will take place at the Palacio de la Rumba in the municipality of Centro Habana, where they are getting ready to welcome the contestants.

Winners will receive an instrument of their specialty and other prizes donated by collaborators and sponsors; they will be exempt from paying the enrollment fee to the Virtual Drummer School and there will be special prizes for the best women and children performances.
