The 48th International Peteneras Singing Contest is nearing its conclusion in Paterna de Rivera, the town in Cádiz where this flamenco style originated. The grand final will take place on July 27.
Fernando Gallo, Director of the International Peteneras Singing Contest, detailed the event’s promotional poster, which features a scene from the Janda region and highlights a local woman, depicted by artist José Gil Lois with María Luisa Sevillano modeling as Dolores la Petenera. The poster also includes the lyrics of a petenera composed by Isidro Sanlúcar and recorded by singer Rufino de Paterna.
Artistically, Gallo explained that the final will be held in the courtyard of IES Paterna, where four singers who advance from the semifinals will compete for various prizes. The event will culminate with a performance by top flamenco artists, including Antonio Porcuna ‘El Veneno’, the first winner of the ‘Dolores la Petenera’ absolute prize in 2023, and winner of several other categories. Additionally, Rocío Luna, a young singer who won the Lámpara Minera at the International Cante de las Minas Festival in 2023, and Pedro El Granaíno, a leading flamenco figure and Giraldillo award winner at the Seville Flamenco Biennial, will perform. The final gala will be hosted by Manuel Curao.
