El Laberinto del Coco live on stage.

El Laberinto del Coco to Inaugurate 27th Season of Sunset Concerts at the Skirball Cultural Center

The Skirball Cultural Center’s twenty-seventh annual free summer music series, Sunset Concerts, begins on Thursday, July 18, at 8:00 pm, with the West Coast debut of El Laberinto del Coco. This Puerto Rican bomba fusion ensemble, founded by percussionist Hector “Coco” Barez in 2017, celebrates the island’s musical innovation while honoring bomba’s roots.

Puerto Rico’s diverse musical styles have significantly influenced Latin and world music. El Laberinto del Coco enhances these traditions by mixing traditional Afro-Puerto Rican rhythms with contemporary elements. Their dynamic performances entertain and educate, as the band members often discuss the historical and cultural significance of bomba music. For their Skirball performance, the band will feature Jerry Medina, a renowned Puerto Rican musician, and his daughter Kianí Medina, vocalist for Residente.

The 2024 Sunset Concerts schedule is as follows: El Laberinto del Coco (July 18); Bab L’ Bluz (July 25); Waahli (August 1); Artist TBA* (August 08); A Sunset Concerts Remix featuring Jauretsi and TossTones (August 16).

*Due to a scheduling conflict, Sinkane will no longer perform in this year’s Sunset Concerts lineup. Stay tuned for an exciting new artist announcement coming soon.

The 2024 Sunset Concerts are presented free of charge. Walk-up tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Parking will be available on-site at the Skirball for $20 upon arrival. Street parking is strictly prohibited.
