On January 18, the Ortigueira City Council unveiled the 2025 program and official poster for the International Celtic World Festival (Festival Internacional do Mundo Celta de Ortigueira), set to take place from July 9 to 13 in northwestern Spain. This year’s edition will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Escola de Gaitas de Ortigueira (Ortigueira bagpipe school), a central figure in the event’s history. The presentation, held at the Teatro de Beneficencia, included insights into the Celtic music festival’s highlights, featuring speeches from key contributors and a preview video.
Local illustrator Mónica Fustes designed the festival’s commemorative poster, reflecting the community’s spirit and honoring the Escola de Gaitas. Using feedback gathered via Instagram, Fustes integrated symbolic words like “pride,” “friendship,” and “freedom” in Celtic languages, alongside meaningful illustrations. She expressed gratitude to the organizing committee and her supporters during the creative process.
Escola de Gaitas President Bruno Lozano praised the acknowledgment of the group’s legacy, announcing special activities and an extended festival schedule. Participating bands include Galicia’s Xarabal and Lembranzas Solpor, Asturias’ Prau Llerón, and Brittany’s Kevrenn Breiz Sant Mark.
Ugía Pedreira and Óscar Górriz introduced the Laboratorio de Cántigas Novas, a workshop promoting Galician oral tradition in modern compositions. Open to adults, the program features 12 sessions starting in March, culminating in July, and costs €200. It includes masterclasses by renowned artists, with pre-registration open until February 24.
Festival Director Alberto Balboa highlighted a lineup combining legendary acts with rising talent. Artists include Milladoiro, Gwendal, La Bottine Souriante, Flook, and the Escola de Gaitas. Notably, past Runas winners Alana and Buíoch will return alongside these celebrated names.
Mayor Valentín Calvín emphasized the festival’s role as a global folk music hub, expressing appreciation for sponsors, volunteers, and contributors. The event concluded with a performance by a quartet from the Escola de Gaitas.
