Lucibela Revives Cape Verdean Tradition with “Moda Antiga”

Lucibela – Moda Antiga (Lusafrica, 2024)

Following the success of her 2022 album Amdjer, which paid homage to Cape Verdean women, Lucibela returns with a new mission on her third album, Moda Antiga (“In the Old Way”). Often regarded as the successor to Cesaria Evora, Lucibela focuses on reviving the rich musical traditions of Cape Verde, reflecting the same rhythms and styles that her predecessors celebrated.

At 38, Lucibela is part of a generation that listens to a wide range of contemporary music genres like electronica, kizomba and pop music. However, she feels a deep responsibility to preserve Cape Verde’s traditional music, such as mornas and coladeiras. These genres, which she believes are typically more appreciated abroad than at home, lack institutional support for their preservation. “We don’t have conservatories or music schools to protect and pass on this heritage to new generations,” she said, emphasizing her personal commitment to this cause.

Moda Antiga is a splendid, emotive and beautifully-crafted tribute to Cape Verde’s cultural heritage, featuring a collection of popular and traditional songs. Indeed, many were composed by legendary figures such as Anu Nobu, Manuel de Novas, Mario Lucio, and Zézé di nha Reinalda. The album was crafted with the help of prestigious musicians and collaborators, including Toy Vieira as musical director, and guitarists Bau and Hernani Almeida. Also featured is the late Totinho, a renowned “morna saxophonist” and close collaborator of Cesaria Evora.

Lucibela’s voice, both smooth and powerful, brings these timeless Cape Verdean classics to life, making Moda Antiga a heartfelt celebration of her country’s musical legacy.

Lucibela said: ‘Moda Antiga’ celebrates Cape Verde’s musical heritage. It’s my third album and, as the name suggests, it’s a traditional album. With many old compositions but also unreleased songs that don’t stray from our tradition. My inspiration comes from the various artists (singers, composers, musicians…) I’ve always listened to those who have been part of my journey so far and those who are still present in my day-to-day life, giving me an insight into our tradition.

The aim of ‘Moda Antiga’ is to keep the essence of our culture alive and to contribute to the appreciation and preservation of its roots through music.”
