Sefo Kanuteh – Afou (self-released, 2021)
Afou is the second kora and balafon album Sefo Kanuteh player released in 2021. Afou, recorded with UK-based musicians, is an acoustic work highlighting Kanuteh’s instruments in a stripped-back setting. It is a beautiful, captivating set of solo and ensemble songs.
On the ensemble pieces you’ll find finely crafted, intricate and captivating interplay between the kora and balafon, both played masterfully by Kanuteh, and the violin and harp, along with his warm vocals. Notable contributions include Rebecca Waller on violin and Serafina Steer on harp.
Known for his work with artists like Baaba Maal and The BKO Quintet, Kanuteh aims to recreate the warmth of his Gambian community in the UK through performances and workshops that highlight Gambian culture.
In his adopted hometown of Norwich, Kanuteh emphasizes the importance of community spirit, teaching Western society the value of support and slowing down. He states, “Our lives are so stressful and fast-paced that we often don’t even know our own neighbors! Gambia is poor, but everyone is still smiling.”
When not performing or writing music, Kanuteh works as a care worker, dedicated to helping people through challenging times.
