Sefo Kanuteh – Adouna (self-released, 2021)
Sefo Kanuteh, a talented kora and balafon player from The Gambia, released two new albums in 2021, funded by Arts Council England. The first album, reviewed here, Adouna, was recorded in The Gambia in 2020 with a long-time friend and collaborator.
Adouna features a full band and celebrates Kanuteh’s Gambian musical roots as well as his deep passion for his country and its heritage, symbolizing a fusion of different cultures. This is a high energy album grounded in tradition, fueled by dazzling kora solos, with a wide range of percussion, powerful drum set, electric bass, as well as call and response vocals.
Known for his work with artists like Baaba Maal and The BKO Quintet, Kanuteh aims to recreate the warmth of his Gambian community in the UK through performances and workshops that highlight Gambian culture.
In his adopted hometown of Norwich, Kanuteh emphasizes the importance of community spirit, teaching Western society the value of support and slowing down. He states, “Our lives are so stressful and fast-paced that we often don’t even know our own neighbors! Gambia is poor, but everyone is still smiling.”
