Andrew Gurruwiwi Band – Sing Your Own Song (Andrew Gurruwiwi Band, 2024)
Four years after their formation, one of Australia’s most electrifying talents, the Andrew Gurruwiwi Band, have released their joyous and rebellious debut album, Sing Your Own Song. The multi-talented aboriginal band is from the Northern Territory, one of the remotest corners of Australia in northeast Arnhem Land. Andrew Gurruwiwi Band has assembled a world-class act that has rolled out one of the most exciting recordings from the region this year.
Fronted by Andrew Gurruwiwi, who is also a popular broadcaster on Yolŋu Radio in Arnhem Land, Sing Your Own Song is brimming with infectious funk, reggae, and Afrobeat grooves and exceptional musicianship.
Gurruwiwi’s musical influences are as vast as the Arafura Sea, drawing inspiration from the rhythms of Africa, Jamaica, India, Mexico, as well as blues, rock, and flamenco. This eclectic mix ensures that Sing Your Own Song is groundbreaking, jubilant, imaginative, and perfect for dancing.
“It’s about making our own sound, our own music,” Gurruwiwi says “Every time when we play music, we listen for the big sound – then we change it. Do it a different way. Different style. Whether it’s the bass, or the keyboard, or the guitar or the bongo, we change it ‘round, until we can get the right beat, the right rhythm. Our sound.”
