Cerys Hafana, Welsh Triple Harp Trailblazer

Cerys Hafana is a composer and multi-instrumentalist known for innovatively transforming traditional music. She specializes in the triple harp and incorporates found sounds, archival materials, and electronic processing into her work. Hafana hails from Machynlleth, Wales, a town where rivers and roads converge on the way to the sea.

Hafana was formerly a member of AVANC, the Youth Folk Ensemble of Wales.

Her second album, Edyf, was released in 2022 and was named one of The Guardian’s Top Ten Folk Albums of the Year. In January 2023, she was featured on Cerys Matthews’ BBC 6 Music ‘Highlights of 2022’ New Year show.

Edyf draws heavily from the Welsh National Library’s online archive, utilizing fragments of psalm tunes, hymns about doomsday, and philosophical musings on eternity, alongside original compositions. The album features the Welsh triple harp, bodhrán, double bass, althorn, and electronically processed sounds, including the striking of a water bottle.

Her 5 track EP, The Bitter, features English and Scottish folk songs along with a bit of Welsh poetry.
