Nicolas Boulerice et Frédéric Samson – Cooltrad (La Compagnie du Nord, 2024)

Nicolas Boulerice and Frédéric Samson’s latest collaborative effort, CoolTrad, departs from prevalent contemporary inclinations. This project notably foregrounds historical writings and poetry, coupling them with a musical accompaniment deeply entrenched in tradition while remaining open to innovative adaptations.

Comprising twelve compositions, CoolTrad unfolds with a tranquil cadence, evoking a palpable sense of melancholy. Each piece engenders an ambiance reminiscent of jazz, characterized by fluidity and rhythmic intricacy within its lyrical framework. The album thus fosters a dynamic interplay between traditional repertoire and the artistic inclinations of its two principal figures, who draw inspiration from the ethos of cool jazz and the cultural milieu of the beatnik movement prevalent in the 1950s.

Central to the thematic and sonic fabric of CoolTrad is a deliberate cultivation of subdued pulsations and heightened emotional resonance. Narratives emerge as the focal point of these interpretations, underscoring a profound engagement with the rich oral tradition of North America. Positioned at the intersection of improvisation and meticulous arrangement, the album traverses diverse stylistic terrains, seamlessly integrating elements of slam poetry with the vibrant energy of traditional jigs.
