Sarah McKenzie Releases Stirring Brazilian Music Album

Sarah McKenzie – Without you (Normandy Lane, 2023)

Gifted Australian jazz pianist, composer and singer, Sarah McKenzie, recently released her superb sixth album, Without You. This is a splendid and elegant Brazilian jazz project that conveys her love for bossa nova and Brazilian music and culture in general.

Without You includes a generous amount of Antonio Carlos Jobim songs along with four of McKenzie’s engaging originals and a few other selections, all played tastefully, and in her own inventive way.

I’ve always loved the music of Brazil, Tom Jobim, Elis Regina, and of course Astrud Gilberto,” says Sarah McKenzie. “What I especially love about Jobim is the clarity of his melodies, songs that one can remember and sing.”

For the recording, Sarah was able to recruit an all-star cast of Brazilian and international music legends. The list includes Jaques Morelenbaum, member of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s band and his arranger for over ten years, on cello; Romero Lubambo, guitarist for Astrud Gilberto, Dianne Reeves and many more; Peter Erskine, drummer with Weather Report, Brecker Brothers and many more; Geoff Gascoyne, bassist with Jamie Cullum and Michel Legrand; Rogerio Boccato on percussion; and Bob Sheppard as soloist on flute and saxophone on some songs.
