Krilja – Sosnitsa: Roma Music from Russia & Eastern Europe (2023)
Sosnitsa: Roma Music from Russia & Eastern Europe represents Krilja’s second album, in which they offer their unique interpretations of traditional Roma (Gypsy) folk songs.
Krilja distinguishes itself by shedding light on a facet of Roma music that is often overshadowed by the more recognized Balkan and South East European traditions exemplified by artists like Taraf de Haïdouks and Goran Bregovic. Their approach is resolutely original, refraining from imitation while imbuing their sound with genuine affection and respect for the roots of this music. The emotional spectrum of their compositions traverses the realms of melancholy and ecstasy. Lyrics, primarily in Romanes but also occasionally in Russian and Romanian, evoke themes of sorrow, pain, joy, love, and vitality.
Founded in 2010 by Marita Johansson, a devoted champion of Roma culture, Krilja’s repertoire extends beyond Roma music to encompass various other folk traditions, including Sephardic and Hasidic Jewish songs. Alongside Marita, Jonas Liljeström and Emil Pernblad, both seasoned musicians in the realm of Roma music and other genres, form the core of the ensemble.
In February 2023, Sosnitsa was meticulously recorded at Studio Epidemin in Gothenburg, Sweden, under the technical expertise of Johannes Lundberg, who also handled the mixing and mastering. Furthermore, Johannes made a notable contribution as a guest musician on this captivating album.
Musicians: Marita Johansson on vocals, guitar, tambourine; Jonas Liljeström on fiddle, vocals, backing vocals, ghatam; Emil Pernblad on guitar, backing vocals. Guest musician: Johannes Lundberg on double bass, backing vocals, whistling.
