No Mad’s Latest Album is a Journey to the Heart of Human Experience

No Mad – Des Oiseaux la nuit (La Curieuse, 2023)

No Mad’s latest release, Des Oiseaux la nuit (Birds at Night) unveiled in 2023 on La Curieuse, embodies the captivating fusion of Pierre Dodet’s poignant lyrics and Pierre Lordet’s evocative musical compositions. Departing from the whimsical realms familiar in the French band’s earlier albums, this musical venture by No Mad seeks a profound connection with its audience, delving straight into the core of human experience, free from embellishments.

Des oiseaux la nuit is meant to be listened to by sharing a precious moment with loved ones. It also celebrates nature and the beauty of things and people.

Élodie Lordet’s captivating lead vocals recall the tender stylings of Clara Ysé, Pomme, or the haunting songs of the iconic singer Lhasa. The songs speak authentically in the first person, gently reaching into the depths of our emotions. The melodies, at times caressing, evoke a sense of intimacy, while at other moments, they delve into raw, deep emotions reminiscent of Laurent Gaudé’s literary craftsmanship. Notably, No Mad skillfully craft an incandescent and timeless poetic folk rooted sound, a reminiscent echo of the lavish and elegant productions by Piers Faccini.

The meticulous, skillfully crafted arrangements highlight a nuanced artistry, drawing parallels to the refined orchestrations used by Caetano Veloso or embracing the earthy, primal folk songs inspired by the polyphonies of legendary folk band Malicorne and the blues of Leyla McCalla.

Band members: Pierre Dodet, lyrics; Élodie Lordet on lead vocals, melodica, percussion; Pierre Lordet composition, clarinets, guitar, bouzouki, vocals; Nicolas López on violin, viola, foot bass, vocals; Elisabeth Renau on cello, vocals; and François Vinoche on drums, percussion, guitalele, vocals.
