‘Mousson de Calcutta’ – Where Hindustani and Carnatic Music Unite

Somnath Roy and Sudeshna Bhattacharya – Mousson de Calcutta (Losen Records, 2023)

Sudeshna Bhattacharya and Somnath Roy, both virtuosos in their own right, came together for a remarkable musical journey on the album Mousson de Calcutta released by Losen Records in 2023.

Talented Indian artist Sudeshna Bhattacharya, a master of the sarod and mohan veena, joined forces with Somnath Roy, a percussion master and soulful singer who plays various instruments such as the ghatam, kanjira, and morsing. This collaboration was a fusion of two musical worlds, combining Hindustani (northern indian) and Carnatic (southern Indian) traditions harmoniously.

At the outset, there were doubts and skepticism. Some believed that the fusion of these two distinct genres, or the combination of the sarod and ghatam, would not yield a satisfying result. However, the music created in this collaboration proved them wrong. It was a testament to the fact that Hindustani and Carnatic music, while distinct in their approaches, share a common essence. They express the same emotions and stories but through different artistic avenues.

As this creative partnership unfolded, a new and unique style of music emerged. The artists involved in this project were not only pleased with the outcome but also inspired by the journey. Their synergy resulted in several remarkable concerts, where audiences rose to their feet in standing ovation.

The culmination of this beautiful collaboration is the album Mousson de Calcutta. It is a testament to the power of musical fusion and the ability of artists to transcend boundaries, creating something truly exceptional.
