La Mòssa’s Alchemy Unites Cultures Through Vocals and Percussion

La Mòssa – Wanda Pétrichor (La Curieuse, 2023)

La Mòssa, a highly talented French polyphonic vocal and percussion ensemble, introduces a novel, grittier repertoire on their new album Wanda Pétrichor that is firmly anchored in the contemporary world. These four multifaceted artists boldly defy conventions, traversing borders and relentlessly testing their own limits. Their diverse identities serve a united group, kindling a spirited, passionate, and socially conscious celebration.

Through new compositions deeply rooted in the present, these four women take a pointed aim at the apparent simplicity of ancient traditions’ rhythms and melodies.

In 2019, their album a moss! featured ancient traditional songs reimagined in unique variations, weaving languages, cultures, and emotions. In 2023, these eclectic artists return with a new set of songs, moving away from traditional inspirations to skillfully venture deeper into today’s world.

La Mòssa consistently refines the interplay between sound and meaning through their repertoire, predominantly crafted by its members. Each member participates in a musical celebration; one that is delicate, impassioned, and spirited all at once. You’ll discover a tasty menu of musical flavors from various parts of the world, including southern Italy, Reunion Island, Spain, and Occitania, with three covers from Sweden, Venezuela, and Apulia blending in seamlessly.

Emmanuelle Ader, Sara Giommetti, Aude Marchand, and Lilia Ruocco, four distinct personalities, are determined to break free from genre constraints and established norms, drawing on their inner freedom and individual influences. In search of more rugged sounds, they wholeheartedly embrace percussion as a fifth voice, adding depth to their ensemble. Artistic residencies have further enriched the synergy of their songs with polyrhythmic play, progressively weaving human and instrumental harmonies into Wanda Pétrichor, thereby strengthening La Mòssa’s compelling chemistry on stage.

Recently, La Mòssa actively participated in the soundtrack of Kim Chapiron’s forthcoming feature film and joined forces with Armel Hostiou. Additionally, they participated in live videos produced by the boundary-pushing director Vincent Moon, who is renowned for his work with The Blogotheque, The TakeAway Concerts, and his documentation of sacred rituals worldwide.
