Pól Brennan – The Irish Revolution (ARC Music, 2023)

Pól Brennan, a highly talented multi-instrumentalist and composer from Donegal, draws from both tradition and innovation in his new work, The Irish Revolution. Brennan is known for his role in the iconic Irish band Clannad and his creative exploration.

Teaming up with his sister Moya, violinist Aiden O’Donnell, keyboardist Steve Turner, and percussionist Nick Bailey, Pól Brennan composed a vivid, exquisite and masterfully crafted musical score for a TV series. In particular, this series delves into the Irish War of Independence (1919-1921) and the tumultuous decade surrounding it, marked by conflicts, shifts in loyalties, and war.

Brennan’s music skillfully captures the complexity and urgency of the events, reflecting sorrow for the losses endured and hope for the future. The captivating soundtrack encompasses themes like the Great Hunger, Home Rule movement, Irish language revival, and the Easter Rising. The war, marked by significant public support, saw the emergence of political party Sinn Féin and the use of Black and Tans constables by the British forces, leading to brutal reprisals.

The tension between British rule and Irish independence culminated in negotiations for a settlement, resulting in a split within the Dáil (House of Representatives) over the terms of the treaty. Civil war ensued, with former comrades now fighting each other. Brennan’s music mirrors these themes, embodying sorrow, hope, and determination in the face of turmoil and change.
