On Friday, March 31, 2023, experience Korean Music & Beyond with the captivating master musician, Gamin, and her ensemble. This mesmerizing performance showcases traditional Korean music rooted in shamanic rituals and agrarian life, as well as contemporary music influenced by Korean culture. Gamin, a distinguished multi-instrumentalist and recognized Yisuja (master) of three traditional wind instruments, including the piri, saenghwang, and taepyungso, will lead the program. She has an impressive resume, having been a principal player at the National Gugak Orchestra for ten years and performing in the Silk Road concert with Yo-Yo Ma in Seoul.
Joining gamin are talented musicians Satoshi Takeishi on percussion, Vong Pak on janggo, Jeff Fairbanks on piano and trombone, Choi Fairbanks on cello, and Marty Ehrlich on bass clarinet and saxophone. The first part of the program features traditional music such as Seol-Janggo, Taepyungso, and Sinawi, which is improvised music for rituals influenced by shamanic groove and melody from Korea.
The second part of the program features contemporary music such as gamin’s The Strangers, which combines sinawi with jazz and reflects the sounds and characteristics of birds in nature. Also, Jungmori Blues, composed by gamin and Ned Rothenberg for piri/taepyungso, bass clarinet/saxophone, and percussion; and three works for Korean and Western instruments composed by Jeff Fairbanks: Echo, Mt. Beacon, and Sangjo Sanjo.
Gamin is a Korean-born New York-based multi-instrumentalist who specializes in traditional Korean wind instruments. She has toured the world performing both traditional Korean music and cross-disciplinary collaborations with acclaimed musicians. She received her Doctorate in Musical Arts in Korean traditional music at Seoul National University and is the official holder of Important Intangible Cultural Asset No. 46 for Court and Royal Military music. Additionally, she has received various grants from organizations such as the Asian Cultural Council and the Ministry of Culture, Sports, Tourism of the Republic of Korea.
