World Music Festival @ Taiwan Announces 2022 Artists

World Music Festival @ Taiwan 2022 will take place October 14-16 at the Taipei Dajia Riverside Park. Artist scheduled to perform include:

Alena Murang of Borneo is the first woman to professionally play and teach the sape lute. Through the power of music and technology, she looks to connect aspects of her culture and gain attention for the indigenous culture of Sarawak. Her first EP, Flight (2016), presents interpretations of traditional Kelabit and Kenyah songs. She was also a youth representative to UNESCO Asia-Pacific for her work in intangible cultural heritage, doing all she can to give her culture a voice in the world.

Ilid Kaolo, from the Indigenous community of Jinalu’an in Hualian County, has a pure, resonant, languid voice. In 2006, she joined the Hohak Band while working as a rice farmer. In 2012, My Carefree Life won her the Golden Melody Awards for Best New Artist, Best Indigenous Singer, and Best Indigenous Album.

In 2015, A Beautiful Moment was named one of the top ten albums of the year by the Association of Music Workers in Taiwan. Her songs, each with its own unique allure, relate the state of mind of a girl in the city and are inspired by traditional songs about everyday Amis life.

Traditional Amis with a contemporary twist

Usay Kawlu is an Amis singer from Hualien who has gained quite a reputation. She has put a lot of effort into learning traditional music and songs in the Amis language out of a desire to pass on the legacy of her culture.

With an elegant, warm, ethereal voice, her unique style is a perfect fusion of traditional music and pop, bringing a novel feel to her tribe’s songs.

Her first completely Amis-language album, The Girl on the Grapevine, describes how an Amis girl in the city searches for her roots. It won her a nomination for Best Indigenous Singer at the 33rd Golden Melody Awards.
