Artist Profiles: JDC – Jesús del Castillo

Bagpipe and whistle player Jesús del Castillo, better known artistically as JDC, was born in Madrid, Spain, in 1988. He began his musical education at 8, learning how to play Galician bagpipes from master player Xoan Brandón. At the same time, he also learned how to play the transverse flute.

Jesús has won several Galician bagpipe contests. In 2001, he began to study the electronic bagpipe also known as gaita MIDI. Thanks to musician and electronic bagpipe inventor Hevia and his team, Jesús del Castillo created an electronic bagpipe model whose prototype is constantly evolving.

Using Brian Finnegan, Mary Bergin, and Gordon Duncan methods, Jesús del Castillo specialized in Northern European Celtic music from Scotland and Ireland.

Currently, Jesús del Castillo plays, the Scottish bagpipe, the uilliann pipe, his own electronic gaita as well as low and tin whistles.

Jesús del Castillo passion is to combine tradition with electronics. His compositions are modern, mixing Celtic music with and electronic devices, specially the electronic MIDI gaita.

In 2022, JDC and band was one of the winners of the Runas 2022 traditional music contest.
