Artist Profiles: Sushma Soma

Sushma Soma is an award-winning Carnatic vocalist based in Singapore and Chennai, India.

Sushma was bestowed the significant Young Artist Award, the highest honor for young artists in Singapore, by The National Arts Council, Singapore, in December 2020.

Sushma has performed worldwide. Her noteworthy collaborations include her performance with Bharata Natyam exponent Mythili Prakash that premiered at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Germany at the Reflektor festival curated by Anoushka Shankar. Sushma was the vocalist and one of the co-composers on the production.

Sushma’s debut EP “‘Sa”, was released in March 2020. It included award-winning American vocalist and composer Aditya Prakash, and BBC presenter and London-based sarod composer Soumik Datta.

In addition to her skill as a performer, Sushma is also an accomplished a writer, researcher and teacher. Her archival work with the National Archives of Singapore was given special mention at the Singapore Parliament in March 2019.

Sushma wholeheartedly supports developing awareness for environmental issues and sustainability. Her 2022 album, Home, a collaboration with Aditya Prakash, combines her Carnatic sensibilities with her passion for the natural world. One of the tracks in the album, ‘Nature’, was featured in the BBC EarthShot awards.
