Czech musician Vlastimil Bjaček has released an album titled Ruky na Dudách (i.e. Hands On Pipes) on the Indies Scope label.
Vlastimil Bjaček is one of the leading pipers in Moravia. Ruky na Dudách features traditional folk and original songs performed in instrumental line ups from solo to groups with jazz rhythms. The album includes a wide range of musical influences, from archaic forest folklore and non-traditional music to world music, electronic and classical music.
Ruky na Dudách includes videos that illustrate Vlastimil Bjaček’s twenty-year collaboration with ethnomusicologist Marian Friedl.
Bagpipes, a jewel of Moravian and Silesian culture, are viewed from many angles: on the one hand as a historical instrument representing one of the starting points of contemporary traditional music in the Beskydy Mountains; on the other hand as a contemporary instrument offering new and often unexpected interpretive possibilities and contexts.
