A Moving Portuguese Musical Tribute to Gandhi

Rão Kyao – Gandhi (Galileo Music Communication, 2021)

Veteran Portuguese flute virtuoso and composer Rão Kyao continues to delight with his fantastic fusion of world music styles. Rão Kyao is deeply influenced by Indian music and, naturally, Portuguese traditional music as well.

This album is a tribute to Gandhi and combines Indian flavors performed with typically Portuguese musical instruments like the Portuguese and Braguese guitars played by skillful guitarists, along with melodic pieces rooted in Portuguese traditions.

The themes on the album include spirituality, respect for nature, returning to the roots, peace, mercy, and love instead of violence.

Rão Kyao says about Mahatma Gandhi: “He’s still ahead of his time, still a futurist. His philosophy is exactly what we need now-a-days.”

The lineup includes Rão Kyao on bamboo flutes and vocals; Bernardo Couto on Portuguese guitar; Carlos Lopes on accordion; Renato Silva Júnior on harmonium and keyboards; Ruca Rebordão on percussion; and Toni Lago Pinto on classical guitar and Braguese guitar.
