Manuela Salinaro Explores Global Percussion

Manuela Salinaro – Main Hands (Liburia Records, 2021)

Italian percussionist and producer Manuela Salinaro started to work on her first solo project, “Main hand” in 2020. The captivating album combines trance-like ancient rhythms and harmonies with electronica.

Manuela Salinaro uses a wide range of global percussion, including zarb, daf, darbuka, tar (the African drame drum, not the middle eastern lute), karkabas, udu and soundscapes. “Main hand” also includes various guest instrumentalists: Albanian cellist Redi Hasa; Valerio Daniele, who intertwines strings and electronic harmonization; Morris Pellizzari, who mixes environments and sounds from Africa and the Middle East with saz, kora and electric saz; Giovanni Chirico on soprano sax; vocalist Irene Lungo; and multi-instrumentalist from Caserta, Francesco Di Cristofaro.

Manuela Salinaro founded the band Kërkim In 2013, a project that reinterprets musical traditions from the Balkans, Turkey, Algeria, and Syria.
