Turkish-Inspired Music with Uncommon Textures

Çeşni Trio – The Fluid Score (Çeşni Music, 2019)

The Fluid Score is a superb album from a group of virtuoso instrumentalists called Çeşni Trio. The United States-based group performs exquisite original contemporary instrumental music grounded in in Turkish makam. In addition to Turkish music, Çeşni Trio also incorporates Anatolian folk, Greek traditional music, and other modal traditions from farther East.

Throughout The Fluid Score, Çeşni Trio treats the listener to delightful, intricate interplay between the string instruments and a wide range of global percussion.

The instrumentation includes familiar Turkish instruments as well as unconventional strings. Tev Stevig uses fretless guitar and alterna-telli as the lead instruments, providing uncommon textures and harmonic content. The alterna-telli is a steel string guitar with additional frets, retuned to emulate the sound of the Turish altı telli, a type of saz also known as Oğur sazı.

The trio includes Tev Stevig on fretless guitar, tanbur, baglama, and alterna-telli; Michael K. Harrist on double bass, yaylı tanbur, ney and vocals; Fabio Pirozzolo on davul, frame drums, doumbek (darbuka), tombak, riq, and cymbals.
