Sublime Rageshree and Khambaj Raga Performances from Sudeshna Bhattacharya and Tanmoy Bose

Sudeshna Bhattacharya and Tanmoy Bose – Sangeet (Losen Records, 2019)

Sangeet is an album of North Indian classical music by two highly esteemed musicians. Sudeshna Bhattacharya is a sarod master while Tanmoy Bose is one of the leading tabla players in the Indian classical music world.

The duo recorded Sangeet in 2019 at a studio in Sofiemyr, in southern Norway. Although sangeet means music, in this case it refers to the tradition of Classical Indian Music and the ways in which different ragas connect with separate parts of the body and the mind.

Sangeet includes three musical pieces. First is the entrancing Alap, the opening section of Rageshree, a solo sarod performance with drone. Rageshree is a melodic night raga that comes from the Hindustani (North Indian) tradition.

The second track is the extensive Jhaptaal and Teentaal part of Rageshree, a delightful virtuosic duet of sarod and tabla.

The final track is the Teentaal of raga Khambaj, where Sudeshna Bhattacharya switches to the higher pitched mohan vina, created by Radhinka Mohan Maitra (Sudeshna’s father’s mentor) in the 1940s. Tanmoy Bose’s tabla creates a mesmerizing rhythmic foundation for the mohan vina improvisations.
