Retimbrar is an evolving musical collective from Porto that explores deep Portuguese traditional rhythms, songs, and instruments. Inspired by the country’s musical traditions, TugaBeat is the name they give to their sound, Portuguese beats and songs, made new. The ensemble is deeply rooted in the diversity of Portuguese folklore, popular poetry and orality, chanting and percussive elements.
The collective was created in 2008 by Andrés’ Pancho’ Tarabbia, a Uruguayan percussionist based in Portugal. He was later joined by António Serginho.
The lineup usually includes eight to ten musicians, including percussionists, along with vocalists and other instrumentalists. However, the band’s albums features numerous musicians.
Retimbrar’s performances are interactive, and the ensemble frequently holds pre-event workshops.
