Touki, Excellent Debut from Rising Senegalese Singer Modou Touré

Modou Touré – Touki (ARC Music, 2020)

Singer-songwriter Modou Touré continues the great musical traditions of Senegal. He is the son of Ousmane Touré, who was the lead singer with famed Senegalese band Toure Kunda.

Modou is currently based in London and put together a superb album that easily combines Senegalese traditions, funk, rock, reggae, blues, and Afropop. He sings in various languages, including Wolof, Soninke, French and English. His lyrics talk about maternal care, African development and unity, destiny, joy, mercy, ancestral teachings, and Modou’s travels and life story.

This is my life story; learning from mistakes has given me the strength and courage to follow my own path,” says Modou Touré.

The lineup includes Modou Touré on vocals and acoustic guitar; Papis Dongue on drums, percussion, bass, and guitar; Jeremy Tordjman on electric guitar; James Ribbans on acoustic guitar; Nikolaj Torp Larsen on Hammond organ, keyboards; Dave Priseman on trumpet; Dave Keech on trombone; and  Dave Lewis on saxophone.
