Latin Jazz Pioneer Cándido Camero Dies at 99

Cuban multi-instrumentalist Cándido Camero passed away on Saturday, November 7, 2020.

Cándido Camero moved to New York City in the mid-1940s. In the United States he worked with well-known American jazz musicians and Cuban instrumentalists as well. Cándido pioneered Latin Jazz, a combination of jazz and Cuban music. Years later, Latin jazz also incorporated Puerto Rican and Brazilian rhythms.

Cándido Camero was granted the National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters award in 2008 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement award in 2009.
