Talinka’s Seductive Mix of Past and Contemporary Sounds

Talinka – “Talinka” (Fanfare Records/Moonjune Records, 2017)

Talinka is a genre-defying quartet led by London-based Israeli singer-songwriter and actress Tali Atzmon. “Talinka,” the quartet’s self-titled debut album, highlights Tali’s jazz-infused theatrical vocal style.

On “Talinka,” the quartet combines jazz, tango, early music and various traditional music influences. The also features the work of Tali’s husband, jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer, and anti-racism political activist Gilad Atzmon. Gilad plays smoky baritone clarinet and soprano saxophone while Baroque music specialist Jenny Bliss Bennett adds an unconventional early flavor.

The lineup on “Talinka” includes Tali Atzmon on lead vocals; Jenny Bliss Bennett on viola de gamba, violin, flute, and vocals; Gilad Atzmon on bass clarinet, soprano sax, and accordion; and Yaron Stavi on double bass. Guests: Frank Harrison on piano; and Enzo Zirilli on percussion.

Talinka – “Rainbow Over Kolonaki”

“Rainbow Over Kolonaki” (Fanfare Records) was released this year. Talinka continues its musical explorations. While there is still jazz, the quartet embraces more world music influences, especially English traditional music and Argentine tango, and continues infusing the compositions with alternative early music elements.

The lineup on “Rainbow Over Kolonaki” includes Tali Atzmon on lead vocals and ukulele; Jenny Bliss Bennett on viola de gamba, violin, and vocals; Gilad Atzmon on bass clarinet, saxophones, guitar and accordion; and Yaron Stavi on double bass. Guests: Ross Stanley on piano and Billy Pod on percussion and drums.
